We have created a special "Moodle admin" theme to enhance the user experience for the admin and settings pages. Goals are simplicity, better look & feel, better overview by hiding complexity.

The theme for example solves several screen estate issues on the admin pages you get when you use one of the fixed width themes by using the whole screen width.
